5. Dufton to Garrigill

If yesterday was too much civilisation for you then today you are in for a treat. Today’s route goes back up, this time over the hills of the Pennines, with very little else between Dufton and Garrigill. Say goodbye to the lowlands, farms and villages – it’s time to go remote.

The route leaves Dufton along a track leading to the Pennie Way, just before Coatsike Farm, and follows it to ascend the first peak of the day, the summit cairn between Green Fell and Knock Fell. Heading down and along Trout Beck leads to the River Tees before passing Tyne Head. It is then downhill and along River South Tyne before reaching Garrigill.

An easy alternative route, prudent in bad weather, avoids the summit of Knock Fell. Or to reach some of the taller spots in the area take the alternative route from Dunfell Hush, following the Pennine Way, over Great Dun Fell, Little Dun Fell and Cross Fell before descending and turning right at Curricks and following the track past Black Gut and Corn Rigg, Pikeman Hill and Black Band into Garrigill.
